Americans spend $142 billion annually on meat, not including seafood, according to a 2008 study from market research group Packaged Facts. Beef leads the way in sales. However, certain varieties of meat are high in calories, saturated fat and cholesterol, meaning consumption should be limited. That doesn’t mean you have to become a vegetarian – just look for meats that fill your protein requirement without hurting your health.
